Basic Workout guide
To kick off your new workout regime

 Dress for the weather.

If it is hot and humid, wear lighter-colored clothes with less weight and moisture-wicking ability. This keeps you cooler. If it is colder, particularly cold and wet, wear three layers. The clothing closest to your skin should be able to wick moisture away from your body so you don’t feel your sweaty. Your middle layer should include insulation, whether wool, down or fleece. The third, and final outer layer should be clothing that is water- and wind-resistant.

Be visible to drivers.

​In general, choose light-colored clothes, preferably reflective. Drivers, especially people behind the wheels of SUVs or large trucks, may have difficulty seeing you at all hours. Pedestrians are most often hit when cars turn corners or a traffic light changes.

 Wear the right shoes.

Hiking boots should be sturdy with a strong tread to prevent ankle injuries and falls. Running or walking shoes should be made for these purposes and have a comfortable fit.

Travel light.

​Slather on the sun block and spray the bug repellant before you leave rather than bringing these with you. Put any emergency money, keys and identification in a pocket or small pack so your hands are free. Carry a cell phone in case of injury or danger.

When hunger strikes, it’s good to know that there are easy, speedy options that are healthy too. We’ve put together our favourite snacks, all with the Good Food healthy stamp of approval. They take 10 minutes or less to make – ready, set, snack!

Avocado & Strawberry Smoothie

Salmon & Chive Bagel Topper

Avocado & strawberry smoothie.

Take ½ avocado, peel it, stone it and cut into chunks. Put the avocado, 150g halved strawberries, 4 tbsp low-fat natural yogurt, 200ml semi-skimmed milk and some lemon or lime juice and honey (if desired) into a blender and whizz until smooth. If the consistency is too thick, add a little water.

Carrot & houmous roll-ups.

Spread 200g houmous between 4 seeded wraps. Coarsely grate 4 carrots and scatter on top of the houmous, finishing each wrap with a small handful of rocket leaves and some seasoning. Roll up and eat.

Salmon & chive bagel topper.

Flake 1 cooked salmon fillet (about 100g) into a bowl. Add 200g reduced-fat soft cheese, the zest and juice of ½ lemon, 2 tbsp snipped chives and plenty of black pepper. Mash everything together with a fork. Split 4 multiseed bagels in half. Lightly toast the bagel halves, then spread with the salmon mixture and top each with a handful of watercress. Serve immediately.
